French Startup, StarofService, Gains Big Investment to Bang Heads with USA Competitor

Investors behind two of Europe's frontrunners in the online industry - JustEat and BlaBla Car - are supporting French startup StarofService. The six-figure investment comes as the latter continues to bang heads with its USA competitor, Thumbtack.

Along with this heavyweight support is the appointment of JustEat's former CEO and Chairman, Klaus Nyengaard as StarofService's Head of Advisory Board and BlaBla Car's newest investor.

With its high resemblance to the Thumbtack model,  this French online marketplace bridges consumers to local professionals that can help them with their needs. Despite its less funds compared to that of their USA competitor, StarofService receives 96,700 requests a month - a number that's comparatively 10 times higher than Thumbtack's on its early stage.

Growing with 600% year-to-year since 2014, StarofService earned its position as the biggest marketplace for services in France. With 10,000 new businesses signing up each month, the company has launched - for over a year now - its operations across 80 other countries, including Turkey and the Philippines.

According to Nyengaard, France has been the major contributor of the company's growth. "While France has provided the majority of growth and momentum for StarOfService so far, the first data from our other embryonic target markets suggests the potential for growth elsewhere is even bigger than in France." He continued, "We've reached a tipping point in the local services space and I'm convinced someone is rapidly going to take the global lead in this huge marketplace, estimated to be worth $400bn. We are going to ensure that the frontrunner is StarOfService."

When asked about the company's virtual similarities with Thumbtack, StarofService's co-founder and CEO, Lucas Lambertini said, "Our vision is bigger. Our success has been unprecedented, but this is just the tip of the iceberg. American TV Actor Brings Acclaimed One-Man Show to Dublin "Must Be Nice" a Comedy Highlight of 2016 International Dublin Gay Theatre Festival

American actor and writer Jimmy Doyle is bringing his acclaimed one-man show "Must Be Nice" to the International Dublin Gay Theatre Festival in May.

Though he may be best known to American audiences as a lovable dad in numerous TV commercials, Doyle is an accomplished writer and performer whose solo performances first gained notoriety while he was a member of Chicago's famed Second City comedy troupe.

Doyle's latest comedy, "Must Be Nice," is produced by renowned Irish singer Dr. Brian Kennedy as part of the 2016 International Dublin Gay Theatre Festival. Called "a one-man reality show" by one reviewer, "Must Be Nice" explores what it means to be too Irish in America and too American in Ireland. "In the show, I reveal the family secrets of growing up gay in a 'bat-shit crazy' but passionately tribal Irish Catholic family whose first language is a cross between sarcasm and envy - 'Must Be Nice,'" Doyle said. The story continues with Doyle exiled to Hollywood, battling a climate hostile to fair skin and intellectualism while threatening to cash in his dual Irish-American citizenship.

American audiences have come to expect sharp, laugh-out-loud comedy from Doyle; he's been called "cranky, cracked, queer (and Catholic)" by the Chicago Reader. But as a writer with a passion for uncovering the truth, Doyle doesn't shy away from tackling some dark history in "Must Be Nice": his mother's death from suicide, his father's death from alcoholism and anger, and his own battles with addiction and depression. Through it all, though, he "finds the funny" and keeps the audience laughing.

The 2016 festival program celebrates a century of LGBT heroes. Minister of State for New Communities, Culture & Equality Aodhán Ó Ríordáin added, "The festival is crucial to providing a space for LGBT voices in the arts. This of course is a very special year for our country, as we reflect on the last 100 years and all of the positive things that we have achieved. Software development the express way - new software release (1.3.1) is out

Today a new software release has been published. An important new feature was added to allow specifying in more detail what a data field exactly is.

Before this release a modeled password was hidden only at an obvious place, but leaked at a place were it was not addressed that explicitely.

To be precise, the non obvious parts in the application were reports and lookup controls that link to the entities containing that security related field.


In this release the intention to hide security related stuff was fixed. Also similar issues will be addressable.

Download products Distributed Multiplatform Framework and CAB DevExpress Codegenerator Compilation. Other products do operate locally by using Sqlite and are thus not critical and will be addressed later.

If users have created the StsManagement software using it productive, have to update the code by regenerating it. As a reference the above picture shows the SecurityUsers_
ApprovedAudiences entity in detail view linking to SecurityUsers. Switch to Designable forms using Settings/ViewDesignableForm and check the dropdown field SecurityUsers in SecurityUsers_ApprovedAudiences. The passwort field should disappear. Also try to design a report for SecurityUsers. It should now be impossible to leak the password.

Burbank based AlphaDogs Post Production celebrated their 13th Annual Pre-NAB Editors' Lounge with a panel discussion on the latest trends and where the future of post-production is headed. The evening kicked off with Terence Curren sharing highlights of topics discussed at this year's HPA Tech Retreat® which he coined as the "Ted Talks of the industry" with Michael Kammes chiming in as it being "by far the best tech event to attend." With NAB's focus primarily on marketing new products, the tech retreat offers seminars from some of the biggest brains in the business as well as a "demo room" that showcases only future products coming down the line that no one knows exist yet.  "It's a great experience to rub shoulders with the intellectual giants of the industry," said Mark Raudonis. "People who have really taken the time to create the foundation and standards of what we do."

Currently, the buzz in the post community is about HDR (High Dynamic Range). HDR looks to be the future of television, offering better pixels, instead of more pixels, as is the case with 4K. While HDR workflows could be easily integrated into existing post-production facilities in HD, the television manufacturers are marketing HDR as requiring a full 4K workflow to sell more of their products to the consumer. Considering you would need to sit closer than 6 ft. from a 65- inch television to even begin to notice the difference in picture quality of 4K, the consumer is getting no real value in purchasing a 4K television. "This is the first year where prominent people at the HPA said that after testing at their facilities, they are realizing people really can't see the difference with 4K," said Curren. Another hurdle in getting HDR out to the consumer is OTT (Over The Top) companies such as Netflix are using 4K as a branding differentiator and are demanding that their original programming content be finished in 4K.

HDR standards are in their infancy which means there are no reference monitors on the market that post facilities can purchase in order to QC for all distribution avenues properly. Final delivery currently is based on aesthetics judgments only. However, as more consumers continue to cut the cord and consume content over the Internet, setting some sort of standard for HDR will become a moot point. Curren comments, "With the future of broadcast looking bleak, listening to broadcasters arguing over eventual HDR adoption is like rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic."

Storage continues to be a big challenge in post-production with cameras changing to chip based media and HDCam rarely being used anymore. Mark Raudonis explains, "There is no physical media that you can put on the shelf and send to the networks as deliverables, so you have to copy everything, and that translates to more storage." Storage, bandwidth and render time also poses problems when it comes working in 4K with most facilities not having budgets to upgrade to all new equipment and software. "From an editorial standpoint it's easy to say, it's just storage and that we need to work in high resolution. I have not once worked on the latest and greatest systems at my job." said Monica Daniel. "My laptop is faster than my work computer. My work computer bogs down when working in high resolution, especially in Avid. The renders are a real pain." While flash would allow more room for storage, it's not cost efficient. Post facilities will continue to use hard drives until a better solution becomes available.

Additional discussions included Virtual Reality that is still in its infancy with only a few select companies delivering content, the importance of security and encryption in the digital age and standards for post-production. The evening wrapped with a Q&A session with members of the audience and Twitter questions being addressed via the live stream.

Like in the Days of Motown, Another Dozier Shows It's All About the Song

Leonard Dozier has been asked all his life about his relationship to Lamont Dozier, one-third of the Motown songwriting and hitmaking trio Holland-Dozier-
Holland. "My answer is always I have no idea whether we are related," says Dozier. Still, Dozier aspires to be every bit the songwriter Lamont was and this is supremely evident on his forthcoming CD "Soul of a Pisces," out April 20th through Tunecore and available via all major online retailers.  Like Lamont Dozier before him, he is a versatile songwriter with profiency in several genres. While many remember Dozier's Motown hits such as "Baby, I Need Your Loving" and "How Sweet It Is To Be Loved By You" they may not so easily remember his number one hit "Two Hearts" with Phil Collins.  One of the first two singles from the album is the soaring R&B summer jam "Nothing Sweeter" which has been receiving some airplay on college and internet  stations.  The song is hybrid throwback to the early 80s and mid 90's and Dozier's gliding baritone is reminiscent of the late Luther Vandross.  The second single, "Soulmate" is a musically beautiful masterpiece (in which he wrote the music) flavored with this velvety baritone. The song has gained some traction on smooth jazz radio and among smooth jazz prgrammers like Michael Tozzi.  The thirs single from the album (out March 15th) is the urban and sexy "Yes" in which he croons lyrics like:

"Be my sweetie, please say yes, would I be your baby? Yes, hell yes. Like Freddie, I'll say 'you are my lady.' We can do this if you want to do this. Just say yes."

Quite frankly, it's the kind of neo-retro song missing from R&B today.  Dozier's "song-centric" approach is not merely limited to his own writing but also to the songwriters who have influenced his approach. "For me, James Taylor and Stevie Wonder influence me greatly as a writer and yet they are very different in there styles and formats," says Dozier. The versatility among formats is what defines "Soul of a Pisces." In a bit of a twist, his voice glides over a terrific pop-soul-rock remake of the Fine Young Cannibals massive hit "She Drives Me Crazy." Fast forward a few tacks ahead and the jazz-funk socially conscious "Gun" paints a harrowing account of the topic of guns in this country. All the more amazing is how much  Gil Scott Heron, who wrote and released the song in 1981, was ahead of his time on many topical issues.  If music tells the story, the soul of a Pisces is a deep and enigmatic one filled with romance, hurt, reflection and inspiration. More importantly, it defies genre simply because of Dozier's commitment to writing great songs regardless of genre. "This versatility and deep understanding and appreiciation of music, melody and lyrics is what I believe helped someone like Lamont Dozier write over 50 number one hits," adds Dozier. "We hear catchy songs today but we don't hear craftsmanship in the songs. I believe the industry has sadly moved away from songwriting as a craft and art form."

In spite of his relatively unknown name in music circles (compared to the likes of Lamont), he is no newcomer to the scene having had a couple of indie label deals at the turn of the century. The 37 year old is well regarded and accomplished as an actor and voice actor with a resume that includes two regional Broadway World Best Actor nominations, an ADDY award as a voice actor and almost twenty years in the business as a whole. "Soul of a Pisces" is special and with the right promotion behind it it could catapult this new Dozier into recognizable territory--if not similar than at least close--of that Dozier of yesteryear.

The charts in the EURJPY Market Guide, which can be downloaded below, show that although volume decreased in 2012 to 2014, 2015 has shown an increase in activity.  However, when one analyzes the actual pip (or tick) movement by year, volatility has decreased significantly since 2008.  It is currently only averaging about 150 pips per day according to the 2015 statistics while in 2008 it was averaging almost 250 pips per day.

Analyzing the sixty minute period, it is evident that most of the movement for the EURJPY is during the London and US sessions.  During the Asian session there is a slight decrease in volatility.  During the Asian sessions, traders may want to trade a longer-term view that will extend into the London and US sessions to capture more movement.

Atari creator Nolan Bushnell heading to Dubai for the DEAL Show 2016

Atari founder Nolan Bushnell, known as the founding father of the video games industry will be present at the DEAL 2016 show.  The 22nd edition of the show is set to open doors on the 19th of this month and will go on till the 21st at the Dubai World Trade Center. Easigrass chosen to install the artificial turf for the Du Football Championship Finals

In Early 2015 Easigrass were contacted by leading Global Brand Consultant, Inspiratus. Inspiratus had won the prestigious contract to organise the Du Football Championship. The initial rounds were being held across the UAE leading up to the Finals in The Dubai Mall on March 19th 2016. Du are one of the two largest telecoms providers in the Middle East so it had to be perfect!

Inspriatus tasked Easigrass with installing a football pitch on the ice rink, the catch being that it needed to be done after the Mall closed at night as before it opened in the morning. No problem we thought until we realised that The Dubai Mall shuts at 1am and opens at 9am, giving us 8 hours to install 1,800 square metres of artificial turf in 8 hours. Normally a pitch this size would take on average a week to install. No problem!!

In order to speed of the installation process we decided to prefabricate the pitch off site. We hired a car park for 3 days and begun to prepare the turf ready for installation. After 3 solid days of work the grass was rolled up for the last time before the event.

On the night of the event the Team arrived at the mall ready to begin the mammoth task of creating a playable pitch, including all line markings, in 8 hours. Luckily, joining our team, were technical specialists, Bas Lodewijkx from Holland and Romulo Chaves from Brazil, 2 of the most experienced artificial grass installers in the world.

One of the biggest tasks we faced was getting the turf into the mall; we had 15 rolls of 15mm Easi-Sport turf, each roll weighing around 350 KGS, so in total over 5 tonnes of artificial grass.

Once the turf was in place we begun to carefully position it ready to close up the seams. Like a well oiled machine the rolls went down one by one until we had a beautiful green surface but at this point nothing to show that it was going to be a football pitch. In order to get the grass down quickly we had to invent some clever contraptions to help us speed things up and the lines were no exception. We don't want to give away our trade secrets but these were certainly the fastest lines that have ever gone down on a pitch this size.

At 8.35 am, 7 and half hours after starting work we were finished. The sun was up and the mall was getting ready for a busy day. We even had tome for a quick kick about, to test the grass, it was definitely NOT for childish fun.... well, maybe a bit!

The event was a huge success; Inspiratus created a buzz and atmosphere that had never before been felt in The Dubai mall. They did an incredible job so huge congratulations go out to them.

Real Madrid football legends Roberto Carlos and Michel Salgado were at the event for the whole afternoon to support and encourage their teams so it was great to see them running around and doing kick ups on a pitch Easigrass had installed.

A fantastic event organised by Inspiratus and very proud moment for the Easigrass team. If you missed it this year make sure you come along next year!

With the participation of 530 enthusiastic young experts and the submission of 24 exceptional and innovative projects, Zayed University records an impressive participation during the first day of Think Science Fair held today (Sunday) at the World Trade Center in Dubai.

Held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Abdullah Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Chairman of Emirates Foundation, the three-day fair featured capacity-building workshops, which help upgrade the youth's inventions and transform their ideas into investment projects with a social value.

Sheikh Sultan Bin Tahnoon Al Nahyan, Managing Director of the Emirates Foundation, and Clare Woodcraft, Chief Executive Officer of the Emirates Foundation, visited Zayed University booth and interacted with young Emirati scientists, who presented creative and smart ideas in the field of science and technology.

Speaking on the occasion, Professor Reyadh AlMehaideb, Vice President of Zayed University, said: "I am pleased to see a powerful presence of Zayed University and its outstanding students at one of the biggest events of its kind in the region that encourages youths' innovations and empowers them to follow their passion for science and technology by engaging in interactive, hands-on experiments."

During the event, Zayed University students have demonstrated various STEM experiments, which have attracted hundreds of visitors, academics, investors, school, and university students.

Aisha AlZaabi, 21 environmental science and sustainability student at Zayed University, demonstrated an experiment using water and cornflour that act like a liquid but behave like a solid when you mix it and hit it.

"I have always been fond of science experiments. I am extremely proud for being a Zayed University student. The University has exerted all possible efforts to provide us with a high quality education and gave us great opportunities to perform and engage in exciting and enriching science and technology activities," Aisha said on the sidelines of the fair.

Aisha and her colleagues from the College of Sustainability Sciences and Humanities at Zayed University performed some fun experiments and science activities in order to simplify various complicated chemical formulas to visitors including school students.

The three-day fair also saw the presence of psychology club students.

Zayed University students introduced iTracker, which measures emotions using eye tracking.

Mariam Ali AlMazrouei, junior psychology student and president of psychology club at Zayed University, said: "I have a passion for psychology and I have always wanted to obtain a psychology degree, which can open the door to a variety of career opportunities. Through studying psychology, the one can learn more about him/herself and gain greater understanding of people. I am a curious person and studying psychology at Zayed University feeds my curiosity and satisfies my own interests in human nature."

Justin Thomas, Associate Professor at the College of Sustainability Sciences and Humanities, said: " We conducted an art gallery at Zayed University, where students use iTracker to measure their emotions. We found that students, who are depressed, spent less time looking at positive image. Pupil measurements are closely linked with cognitive and emotional events."

Fares Howari, Professor of Environmental Sciences at Zayed University, also expressed his excitement to see increased student involvement, participation, and motivation that reflect Zayed University's critical commitment to enhance youth development and create a pool of talents.

     High above the bay, Ettrick House stands brooding, steadfast against the autumn winds.Couch grass and bindweed choke the once well-tended flower beds and the long sweeping drive is pitted and potholed. The windows are shuttered, dark.

     Alone in the silence of the empty house he sits nursing a glass of whisky, gazing at the pictures he sees in the flickering flames of the fire set against the chill of the evening.

     Now, in his old age, the ghosts come back to haunt him. They give him no rest. And he wonders if tonight will be the night when at last she is found."

New data acquisition system DAQ20 from Dataforth

MAQ20 is the new data acquisition system from the US manufacturer Dataforth. The system distinguishes itself with its modular structure for space-saving and fast top-hat rail assembly as well as top cost efficiency per channel. All the system components and the software packages for analysis and graphic depiction of the measurement data are available from the German distributor Acceed (www.acceed.com)

MAQ20 is the latest development by the renowned US manufacturer Dataforth for industrial data acquisition, measurement analysis and signal processing.  The system consists of a communication module as a controller unit, the backplane for wiring and up to 24 individual I/O modules with an overall capacity of 384 channels. Two special software packages from the manufacturer support the configuration and controlling, provide configurable graphic interfaces, various protocol options, scripting and further tools facilitating the use of the system. LabView drivers are also available.

The central communication module controls all the system properties and settings, secures the power supply for the modules via the backplane and serves to forward data via the Ethernet, USB and RS-232/RS-485 interfaces.

A large number of modules are available for structuring application-specific systems. These include input modules for analogue signals, voltage and electricity signals, frequency signals, thermal elements, potentiometers, resistance thermometers, load measurement and further applications. Output modules can be used for switching and controlling tasks. Combined I/O modules with discrete input and output channels round the range off and can be used for special tasks and, for example, for alarm functions.

The new MAQ20 system can be used ideally for the flexible application of several channels, in particular in measurement and test environments in process and factory automation, plant control and production monitoring. With their compact construction, the robust devices are perfectly designed for top-hat rails in 19" racks. The permissible temperature range from -45 to +85 °C meets demanding industrial requirements. Alternatively, the system can be remote controlled via a host PC or work independently as a standalone system as a data logger.

Dataforth has more than 30 years' experience in development in the area of industrial testing, measurement and control technology. All the MAQ20 system's devices are CE and UL / CUL-certified, the process for ATEX approval has been initiated. Atkinson and Slack claim Queensland TreX crowns

Only five seconds separated two-time Olympian Courtney Atkinson and current national under-23 champion Max Neumann at the finish of the elite men's long course cross triathlon race at the Queensland TreX Championships on the Sunshine Coast on Saturday.

The 36-year-old Atkinson, who made a last minute decision to race just two days prior to the start, clipped the 20-year-old fellow Queenslander on the line in a time of 2 hours 11 minutes 16 seconds after a 1,500-metre swim, 30-kilometre mountain bike and 10-kilometre trail run in and around the rainforests of Ewen Maddock Dam in Landsborough.

"It was a great course especially for people doing their first race off-road," said Atkinson, the 2015 OTU Oceania Cross Triathlon champion. "It made for good racing at all levels.

"It was a competitive men's field," he continued. "It's always nice to get a win, but mainly had a smile on my face all day racing around the bush."

Wollongong native and 17-time Xterra champion Ben Allen (NSW), who was looking to make history by becoming the first elite male and only second athlete in the event's six-year history to sweep all three Dirt Fest titles since Connie Silvestri (QLD) claimed all three with wins in Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland in 2012, finished third.

In elite women's action, Great Britain's Jacqui Slack claimed victory and the overall TreX series title with a time of 2:28:15 - nearly 10 minutes over second place finisher and international endurance superstar Renata Bucher (SUI).

"I'm over the moon with series champ," Slack told In2Adventure post race. "It's awesome to race Renata, and it's makes for exciting and close racing throughout the series.

"It's a super location, and the camping makes for a great family atmosphere,"
she continued. "The course is fast and flowy, and certainly a great one for the newbies as it's lots of fun.

"I've been focusing on this race and the Xterra Asia-Pacific Championships weekend, so was stoked to get the win and feel in great shape.

"I'm the fittest and most prepared I've ever been, and I am looking forward to a successful 2016."

Joining Slack, is men's overall series champion Brodie Gardner (QLD), who finished fourth on the day just behind Allen.

"It's great to win the series as I felt I was very consistent over the races and it's been a goal of mine the past 12 months after I crashed out in Lake Crackenback, which essentially cost me last year's title where I ended up finishing the series in second," admitted Gardner, who is fresh off an Xterra Saipan win in March. "As for yesterday's race, it was great to race in 'my backyard' with some good family and friends supporting me after the past couple of months travelling all over Asia and Australia to race.

"Obviously having home ground advantage, I was aiming for the win yesterday and the Queensland title, but it just wasn't my day with the quality field and recent work commitment," he added. "I've managed to have some really good racing the past few months, but I've also been working extremely hard setting up my business Intune Sports and Health where I'm supporting and training other athletes to achieve their own sporting and health goals which sometimes has to come before my own racing."

In2Adventure returns to the Sunshine Coast next week as it hosts the Mountain Designs Adventure Race Australia 18-hour Dark Side and 12-hour Dawn Attack, before turning it's attention toward the ITU Cross Triathlon World Championships at Lake Crackenback Resort & Spa in the iconic Snowy Mountains (NSW) - a historic first time in the Southern Hemisphere.
