From the Red Carpet to the Final Four, BDI Offers Tips for the Perfect Viewing Party

This time of year, everyone has different reasons for gathering with friends and family in front of the television. Some love the red carpet glamour of the Oscars, while others watch their NCAA Tournament brackets go up in flames during March Madness.

For those hosting parties, now is the time to begin thinking about how to provide the ultimate viewing experience. There are four things to consider before guests arrive.

"It's all about giving guests the best view, seating them comfortably, and allowing them to feel like they are part of the experience with the right sound and set up," said Dave Adams, Marketing Director of BDI, an industry leader in media furniture.

Here are BDI's home theater set up tips:


The average seated height for an adult is 18 inches above the floor, with a relaxed eye level two feet above that, so the center of the screen should be around 42 inches, or 3 ½ feet from the ground. For viewing the TV, a swivel mount is a great option for helping everyone catch the action. Just make sure your media furniture is the right size to accommodate your TV.


The distance from the TV should be at least double the diagonal measurement of the television. Hosts with 42-inch TVs should seat their guests comfortably at least seven feet away from the screen. Check out the view from each seat in the room, because unless you have a curved TV, for example, views from the side may be limited.


Sound needs will vary, depending on the size of your room. In smaller spaces, a simple soundbar should provide plenty of sound for the whole group. In larger spaces, hosts should consider surround sound, placing speakers throughout the room, and close to higher traffic areas. It is also important to consider a media cabinet that can hide those wires and best accommodate sound systems.

Set Up:

Consider today's television technology. 4K and curved TVs can make guests feel like they're sitting in the first row, or on center court, but also come with plenty of cords and cables. Make sure your media cabinet can accommodate the latest technologies with features like cable management, flow through ventilation, IR-friendly glass and movable shelving.

Generous merchants place specially designed Monroe County Friends of Animals donation boxes in strategic locations to help homeless cats and dogs in Monroe County.

Pam Crays, Fundraising Chair for the organization said,  "We are very appreciative to the businesses who are helping us by placing Friends of Monroe County donation boxes in their establishments. The donations that generous patrons of the businesses make will be  help us fulfill our mission"

The stated mission of the Monroe County Friends of Animals is to:
• Support Monroe County government and other related groups to provide shelter, food, care, adoption and health services for stray dogs and cats;
• Support the prevention of cruelty to dogs and cats;

Keller Williams Southwest Hosts Second Annual Shredding Hunger event

Keller Williams Southwest (KWSW) continues their mission of "giving where you live" by inviting the Fort Bend community to help "shred for a cause" and feed the hungry.

Local businesses and community members are welcome to bring up to two trash bags of papers that need to be shredded. In return, donations of canned goods or non-perishable food items are requested. All food collected during the event will be donated to the East Fort Bend Human Needs Ministry.

The event will be held outside the KWSW office, located at 1650 Highway 6, Ste 350 in Sugar Land.

Crystalbrook Collection Announces New Hotel For Cairns

This acquisition fulfills Crystalbrook Collection's current vision to develop three premier properties within the region over the next three years, with each development delivering a unique premier lifestyle experience.

G.A Group Australia chief executive Mark Davie said the hotel development would be a "premier complex" extending from the Abbott Street entrance through to the Esplanade.

"We are still in the planning stages, however we do know we want to maximize the sites potential and deliver a premium product to Cairns and visitors – one that is built according to what is suitable for the location."

Design of the Esplanade/Abbott St property concept will start immediately, with the G.A Group and associated developers committed to working with the Cairns Regional Council to ensure the development is managed well.

"Similar to our other two Cairns locations, Lake St and Tradewinds, we plan to invest $100 million dollars into this complex, ensuring we set a premium standard of property across the collection.

"G.A Group Australia is committed to the growth and development of the region through the Crystalbrook Collection.

"It is really important each property has a distinct and unique offering, embodying the North Queensland way of life, whether it be a tropical resort or contemporary inner city hotel," Davie said.

Construction on The Bellview development will start towards the end of the year after the design and approvals stage, with work expected to take two years.

This timeline fits perfectly into Crystalbrook Collection and G.A Group Australia's plan to deliver three premium Cairns properties over three years.

The first stage of the Tradewinds redevelopment will be completed in 2018, the Lake Street development in 2019 and the Esplanade/Abbott Street property (the Bellview site development)
estimated to be completed in 2020.

G.A Group Australia's investment into the Cairns region over recent months has been extensive, with Ghassan Aboud Group Chairman Ghassan Aboud commenting that it was the rainforest, reef and outback that attracted him to invest in the region.

#GetWells: American Council on Science and Health Launches New Initiative

Dr. Jamie Wells, M.D., Director of Medicine at the American Council on Science and Health, is launching a new #GetWells campaign for 2017.

The campaign will address a lot of the issues Americans are concerned about in a culture that is increasingly paralyzed by fear. The primary focus of the #GetWells campaign by the award-winning pediatrician will be on reassuring parents that they can relax a little.

Wireless Connections Solve the Problem Of Using Various Sensors In Remote Monitoring and Control Appl

Many monitoring applications require different sensor types to measure and report various parameters to a central Gateway, programmable logic controller (PLC), or other control device. In the upstream oil and gas market, level, temperature, pressure, flow and other points are monitored in different applications.  Sensor choice is often driven by the environment, desired accuracy, cost and what is being monitoring.  In tank level monitoring, for example, the contained materials as well as monitoring requirements dictate the best sensing technology for the job.

It is rare that an operator will want to use sensors for all required measurements from a single sensor manufacturer.  In fact, a single manufacturer rarely supplies all these different types of sensors.

Consequently, the network connecting all these sensors together will need to interface with a variety of sensor types with various sensor interfaces.  Common sensor interfaces are 4-20mA, 1-5 Volt, Modbus, HART, digital, pulse and SDI-12.  Others exist as well.  Wireless connectivity, if used correctly, will solve the issue of mixing multiple sensor interface types and allow all the different data formats to work with each other.

If you are looking for a wireless system that can connect all these different sensor types with different interfaces together, ensure that the wireless vendor has nodes that support different interface types.  This allows you to choose the sensor that best solves your application problem and not be handcuffed to buy all your sensors from a single manufacturer and use their wireless system.

To sum up, sensor networks will often utilize different sensor types from different sensor manufacturers.  Wireless connection can actually solve the connection problem and allow various sensor interfaces to coexist within the same network by supplying nodes with different sensor interfaces.

Signal Fire Remote Monitoring System Offers Safer, Wireless Solution In Monitoring Levels of Acid in

A regeneration facility replaced a manual method of measuring hazardous liquids in rail cars with a Signal Fire Remote Sensing System to increase worker safety.  Previously, technicians used a measurement stick to determine the levels of sulphuric acid in rail cars shipped to the site daily by a refinery.  Using the stick required tank measurement multiple times a day, exposing workers to acid fumes, posing a risk to their safety and health.  As a manual method, tank measurement by stick varied in accuracy, dependent on the operator.  The procedure was also time-consuming and laborious, requiring workers to return to tanks several times during the day to conduct the measurements.

Using a radar tank sensor integrated with a Signal Fire Remote Sensing System, technicians only need to place the radar sensor inside the tank when first opened and remote it when the tank is full of spent acid.  During an eight-hour shift, an operator could make as many as 8 to 10 trips to the rail car sites to verify tank levels.

Interfacing with the radar tank sensor, a SignalFire Class 1 Division 1 Sentinel HART node sends tank level data to a Gateway through a mesh network where it becomes available in standard Modbus format for download into a computer. The hazardous location node also powers the sensor, making the level monitoring system completely wireless.  A SignalFire Toolkit provides software for interfacing with the equipment from the office.  As an entirely wireless system, the SignalFire Remote Sensing System eliminates the need to run conduit as required by a wired system.

SingStrong New York International A Cappella Festival to be Held at Adelphi University

Professional a cappella groups from around the world will perform with collegiate and high school groups at the SingStrong International A cappella Festival from February 10-12, 2017 at Adelphi University Performing Arts Center (AUPAC), 1 South Ave, Garden City, New York. SingStrong Inc. is a public charity and this marks its 14th a cappella festival.

The all-vocal event consists of five concerts and two days of classes and coachings, all featuring nothing but the human voice. Event profits support charity, with a silent auction to benefit the fight against Alzheimer's, and other proceeds supporting music programs with a special focus on singing and a cappella music.

SingStrong kicks off on Friday, February 10 at 7:00 p.m. with "ACA-IDOL," an a cappella competition for semi-professional and collegiate groups in the style of X-Factor, America's Got Talent and American Idol. Celebrity judges give live feedback on the performers' 10-minute sets, while audience members vote for their favorites from their cell phones. First prize is $1,000.

The SingStrong matinee concert on Saturday, February 11 at 2:00 p.m. features a high school competition with awards for performance and arranging and composition, as judged by respected a cappella educators. Single Singers, an open group that anyone can join, will also perform.

Saturday night features two SingStrong main event concerts, each with its own lineup of professional a cappella groups. The 7:00 p.m. concert includes Denmark's Postyr, New York's Blue Jupiter with Diana Preisler and Connecticut's Connect. The 9:30 p.m. concert includes Stiletta, Fii, Zulal and Backtrack.
